Style guides: Cannes Film Festival

Style guides Cannes Film Festival

This month, the 69th Cannes Film Festival took place – and wasn’t it an event for style? As always, film stars and fashionistas made their way to they special event, which was as much about glamour as it was about the silver screen. But what tips can we take from this year’s stars when it comes to the hottest fashions?

The stars: What did they wear?

Look #1 A twist on the tux

The classic tux is always a good look. Timeless and sophisticated, it never goes out of fashion. However, some stars updated the look to show off the own personal style – and the result? Very sharp indeed!

Lucky Blue Smith was one of our style inspirations this year. He opted for a dinner jacket in midnight blue, as opposed to black, and teamed with black shirting and bow tie.

Look #2 Classic black tie

The great thing about black tie is that is suits all men – no matter what your style, personality, or appearance. As long as you’ve opted for something that fits well and is properly tailored you’re on to a winner. There are plenty of ways to jazz up this look too – perhaps with a change in colour when it comes to your jacket.

Colin Firth and Ryan Gosling were just two of the stars embracing black tie style. Of course, being the star he is, Mr Gosling added a touch of old-age Hollywood glamour with an off-white Ralph Lauren jacket too.

Look #3 The ultimate smart-casual

Cannes fashion doesn’t just stop at the red carpet, with stars floating all around the glam resort, there’s inspiration to be taken from everywhere. Off-duty, our favourite style icons and celebs were all adopted the smart-casual look – and doing it very well indeed.

Mark Webber and Ryan Gosling were both seen in well-fitting suits with open-neck shirts. The unbuttoned look was laid-back yet sun-appropriate – and the perfect combination of smart-casual.

While Mark Webber went for a light, plain shirt paired with trainers, Mr Gosling opted for stylish pink striped shirting fabric, by Gucci, which proved to be one of the key styles of the year. Both on and off the red carpet, there was plenty of pattern, colour, and lightness to men’s attire.

Create the look yourself with Cambridge Plain Iris, Grange AX Pink Fabric, and Grasmere GAF Blue.

Acorn Fabrics is one of the only shirting mills that engages with and sells directly to end customers. Aside from this, the quality of their fabrics is on par with the likes of Thomas Mason and other big players in the market. Their collection has some uniquely interesting colours and patterns such as a red striped heavy Oxford (my shirtmaker in Naples couldn't find a similar fabric from any other mill) or the cotton-linen Aruba denim. Having browsed through shirting swatches from many other mills, I also think that Acorn has the best collection of Tattersall shirtings anywhere. I've taken several of Acorn's fabrics to Naples with me and had them made into beautiful shirts.

My Acorn fabrics arrived in Sydney today - including the Malham 280 royal. The staff at Acorn are professional and generous, and head an extraordinary company with excellent quality cloth. I feel blessed to have discovered them and will definitely look forward to using them again in future. Sal B in Sydney

I can't praise Acorn Fabrics highly enough. A wonderful company, I didn't think such companies still existed. Five stars are just not enough!
