This weekend the awards season comes to its climax as the 88^th Oscars takes place in Hollywood. While the event is designed to primarily celebrate great cinematography, it’s probably the fashion of the night that’s talked about most. In today’s blog, we’re going to be showing you just how to get that red carpet style and channel your inner celebrity…

The tuxedo and its history

The Oscars fuses together glamour, glitz, sophistication and style to create one the greatest awards ceremonies on earth. Amongst the fabulous frocks and gowns stands one timeless look that tops them all – the tuxedo.

From its origins as an alternative to the tailcoat to its re-birth in the 1930s, the tuxedo has gone from strength to strength creating a sophisticated look for high-end events and functions. More recently it’s also become a real trend in weddings too, with grooms adopting the wow-factor look.

While the tuxedo is a classic look, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t variations of the style available. At this year’s Oscars, we expect to see many of the men adopting the look and throwing in a touch of their own personal style.

Some of the options include:

·       Black faille peak lapels teamed with on-point tailoring

·       Distinguished colours, such as midnight blue or charcoal grey, as opposed to traditional jet black

·      Slim fitting skinny suits

·      The colour block look featuring two strong colours – one for the trousers and the other for the jacket

·      Shawl lapels trimmed with on-trend satin for a classic finish

·      A classic white shirt with a covered placket

·      Personalisation with accessories, such as wool-backed silk scarf

·      A polished look with lace up patent leather shoes

 

The finishing touches: Your shirt

Of course, choosing the right shirt is key to creating the black tie look too. Typically, the shirt that accompanies a tuxedo should be plain white – but it can come in a variety of styles.

Wing collar shirts and turndown collar shirts are both popular options – but you should avoid choosing a button-down collar. Other features you might like to consider are studs – instead of buttons on both edges, French cuffs – for a semi-formal evening look, and a detailed bosom – for example, with pleats.
