How to Brighten Up Your Work Wardrobe

Traditional colours are always the safest option in the workplace, but with the right guidance, there’s no reason why you can’t change things up a little and gain the treasured status of being the ‘fashionable colleague’. In this article, we’re going to give you some tips on how to brighten up your work wardrobe, making you look and feel fresh every time you head to the office.

Keep the Basics Plain

Sometimes, caution is a virtue when it comes to fashion. If you head out and buy a bright blue patterned suit with tassels hanging off the shoulders, it’s likely not going to go down too well. Instead, the first step is to keep the basics plain. Invest in a nicely made suit that is well fitted and has been designed especially for you. Choose a neutral colour like grey or dark black as this will help to ensure that the additional clothing items we’re going to discuss shortly will work with your outfit.

Add Colour with Shirts

Now, with a nice, well fitted suit in your wardrobe, it’s time to add some colour. Work shirts can be found in all the colours of the rainbow, so there’s no need to always stick with white unless it’s what you feel most comfortable in. And the black and dark grey fabrics we mentioned above? They tend to match well with everything. Light blue is a nice, safe colour that a lot of men feel comfortable in, but there’s no reason why you can’t take things further and opt for a nice green or purple.

Let Your Personality Shine with Accessories

Your shirt isn’t the only part of your wardrobe that can help to add some colour and spice to your outfit. Most men are expected to wear ties in the workplace, and this can be another great area in which to add some understated style. Rather than wearing a plain, neutral tie, look into those with patterns or prints that excite you. A nice checked tie or an Aztec print could work wonders here. Just make sure it matches your shirt (and doesn’t clash!) and you’re good to go.

Don’t Forget Your Shoes

Finally, one piece of their outfit that most men neglect to give much attention to is their shoes. If your workplace is more on the casual side, you may be able to get away with a pair of coloured fashion trainers; although do ensure these are fashion trainers and not a bright green pair of Adidas. If not, you can look into some nice brogues. These don’t always have to be purchased in black. A nice brown or grey pair can look just as good and could be a great addition to your outfit.

And remember the golden rule – while these tips will help you to brighten up your work outfit, you need to feel comfortable in the clothes you are wearing too. Don’t be afraid to reach out to a tailor for style advice if you need it. Here at Acorn Fabrics, we’ve got a fantastic range of cotton shirting fabrics in various styles and colours that you can use to kickstart your work wardrobe refresh – why not take a look around and see what you can find?
