English country pursuits, such as riding and fishing, have been popular for centuries now. Since the 19th century, these activities have become paired with attire to complement the day’s events.
From this time, much of Britain’s upper class would take time out to retire to the countryside and enjoy a whole host of country pursuits. They’d pack the practical and durable clothing – which still remains popular and fashionable today – to wear as they explored the country.
In modern day, similar attire, patterns, and fabrics are still the clothing of choice when it comes to country pursuits. In fact, many of the original tailors who produced some of the first clothing of this style still exist – with some having been granted a royal warrant too!

From head to toe: A pair of wellies is a must on wintery or muddy days – especially when you’re spending all day out in a field. If you’re looking for something more formal, brogues are your best option. Team with a flat cap to look like a real English gent.
An extra layer: With the unreliable British weather, it’s best to pack an extra layer just in case. Waxed and quilted jackets are popular options for the English country gent, while a gilet is a good choice for summer.
The suit: Team your shirt with chinos or tweed trousers, depending on what you’re up to and the weather forecast. A light wool jumper may also be a good idea if you’re heading out bright and early.
