Perfect shirt styles for country pursuits

The spring and summer months are a great time to get outdoors and experience all those country pursuits. From shooting to riding, there’s a lot to love about life in the country – plus an opportunity for a fantastic wardrobe to match! With Tattersall checks and stylish herringbone shirting in abundance at Acorn Fabrics, our online store is a great place to start when it comes to your outdoor attire…

Country life

English country pursuits, such as riding and fishing, have been popular for centuries now. Since the 19th century, these activities have become paired with attire to complement the day’s events.

From this time, much of Britain’s upper class would take time out to retire to the countryside and enjoy a whole host of country pursuits. They’d pack the practical and durable clothing – which still remains popular and fashionable today – to wear as they explored the country.

In modern day, similar attire, patterns, and fabrics are still the clothing of choice when it comes to country pursuits. In fact, many of the original tailors who produced some of the first clothing of this style still exist – with some having been granted a royal warrant too!

Shirting styles

When it comes to your shirting, there are two styles guaranteed to make sure you look the part. Tattersall shirts and gingham checked fabrics are two of the most common looks for men’s country attire. You can read more about Tattersall fabrics in one of our previous blog posts here.

Some of our favourites in the Acorn Fabrics shop include:

  • Fife 25 brown
  • Fife 30 green
  • Fife 70 sky

For something a little more luxurious, why not choose herringbone shirting? With its twill weave, herringbone has a high-end feel about it and works especially well for those post-country pursuit formal events.

Some of our favourite herringbone fabrics include:

Completing the look

While the shirt is a key part of your country look, there are a few extras you’ll need to fit right in…

From head to toe: A pair of wellies is a must on wintery or muddy days – especially when you’re spending all day out in a field. If you’re looking for something more formal, brogues are your best option. Team with a flat cap to look like a real English gent.

An extra layer: With the unreliable British weather, it’s best to pack an extra layer just in case. Waxed and quilted jackets are popular options for the English country gent, while a gilet is a good choice for summer.

The suit: Team your shirt with chinos or tweed trousers, depending on what you’re up to and the weather forecast. A light wool jumper may also be a good idea if you’re heading out bright and early.
