The best of our winter fabrics

When it comes to your winter wardrobe, there’s one thing you should prioritise: the warmth of your clothing. While style is important, warm material reigns; after all, there’s no point buying shirting materials that are too cold to wear! With this in mind, we’re sharing our top fabric recommendations for winter this year. From twill to warm winter fabrics like brushed cotton – find the perfect shirting today.

Twill fabrics

Twill fabric is one of the classic shirting fabrics for winter. Its tight structure and durable construction make it a little thicker than fabrics like poplin and ideal for autumn and winter’s cooler temperatures. Twill is also available in a number of variations – making it one of the most versatile fabrics on offer. Some of the most popular types of twill are dobbie and herringbone – both of which are available at Acorn Fabrics. The former features a small geometric pattern while the latter features a distinct V-shaped weaving.

Our twill fabric recommendations for winter include:

Malham 230 Black Dobbie Fabric
Burneside Plain Navy Solid Fabric
Fife Plain Navy Fabric
Gabardine Navy Fabric
• Hampton 505 Green Check Fabric

Oxford fabrics

If you’re looking for shirting for the office, you can’t go wrong with Oxford cloth. While it’s not quite as warm as twill, it is ultra smart – a must for the office. Best of all, it’s soft and comfortable to wear too – other important factors to consider if you’re going to be wearing your winter shirt all day long. The symmetrical weaved fabric is available in a huge range of colours, so it’s easy a pick a shirt suited to the season. On especially cold days, you could team your Oxford shirt with a wool suit to guarantee warmth, whatever the temperature.

Our Oxford fabric recommendations for winter include:
Classic White Royal Oxford Fabric
Oxford Ivy Navy Striped Fabric
Oxford Plain Navy Solid Fabric
• Oxford Harbour Coral Checked Fabric

Brushed cotton fabrics

A must-have staple in your winter wardrobe is a brushed cotton shirt. The warmest of our shirt fabrics, brushed cotton has excellent insulation properties – helping you keep warm in the coldest of temperatures. As you may have guessed by its name, it’s also been brushed to remove its lint and fibres, making it soft to touch and soft on the skin. As always, we have plenty of styles to choose from too – so it’s yet another fabric suited to all tastes.

Our brushed cotton fabric recommendations for winter:

Fife 70 Navy
Fife 80 Midnight
• Kendal Dale Rust Check Fabric
• Sterling 12 Red Checked Fabric
Sterling Plain Navy Solid Fabric

If you’re looking for a great selection of casual shirting for the season, we recommend our Country Checks collection. You’ll find a fantastic range of checked styles in materials including brushed cotton and twill. Shop the collection today.
