How to wear printed fabrics with style

how to wear printed fabrics with style

Just because it’s autumn, doesn’t mean you’ve got to say goodbye to statement fabrics and bold colours. Printed fabrics are ideal for adding a touch of style to your attire and showing off your individuality. In fact, in 2016, a printed shirt is a must-have staple in any man’s wardrobe. Luckily, at Acorn Fabrics, we’ve got plenty of styles to choose from – no matter how reserved you are about pattern. In today’s blog, we’re showing you how to get the printed fabric look just right – and how to avoid any fashion fails!

Top fashion tips for printed fabrics

  1. Team prints with simple attire

If you’re going for a statement printed shirt, make sure you keep the rest of your outfit relatively simple. Block-coloured chinos or jeans will always work well – but be careful to team your shirt with complementary colours.

Our Devonshire 02 Blue Printed Fabric and Devonshire 04 Red Printed Fabric would look great with white, black or tan bottoms, while our Devonshire 01 Cherry Printed Fabric is best suited to burgundy or grey.

  1. Layer up printed fabrics

If you’re a little nervous about prints and pattern, why not team your printed shirt with another layer. A denim jacket, light coat or V-neck jumper are all great options and allow just a pop of pattern and colour.

Tartan shirt fabrics are made for layering and are extremely versatile. Shirts made from fabrics like our Brodie Tartan Fabric look great when worn open and teamed with a plain white tee.

  1. Wear fabrics seasonally

Printed fabrics are great – but we don’t recommend wearing your favourite Hawaiian shirt come winter! When choosing a printed shirt, opt for something seasonal.

During the autumn and winter months, why not choose our Devonshire 03 Navy Printed Fabric or our brand new Hampton 402 Wine Printed Fabric?

Come spring and summer, fabrics that feature lighter, brighter colours, like our Hampton 401 Sky Printed Fabric and Hampton 301 Blue Printed Fabric, are bound to look great!

  1. Opt for smart-casual printed fabrics

Printed shirts are best worn outside of the workplace, however, that doesn’t mean to say they’re super casual. When styled well, a printed shirt can help you to achieve that smart-casual look, making it ideal for date night and socials. Smaller, intricate patterns, as in our Hampton 302 Blue Printed Fabric, help create a smarter look while bigger patterns often look more casual.

If you like, you can also team your printed shirt with a tie. As you’re already wearing a busy print, we recommend choosing a block colour tie to avoid pattern overload. A skinny fit tie also helps ensure a fashionable, smart-casual look.

Acorn Fabrics is one of the only shirting mills that engages with and sells directly to end customers. Aside from this, the quality of their fabrics is on par with the likes of Thomas Mason and other big players in the market. Their collection has some uniquely interesting colours and patterns such as a red striped heavy Oxford (my shirtmaker in Naples couldn't find a similar fabric from any other mill) or the cotton-linen Aruba denim. Having browsed through shirting swatches from many other mills, I also think that Acorn has the best collection of Tattersall shirtings anywhere. I've taken several of Acorn's fabrics to Naples with me and had them made into beautiful shirts.

My Acorn fabrics arrived in Sydney today - including the Malham 280 royal. The staff at Acorn are professional and generous, and head an extraordinary company with excellent quality cloth. I feel blessed to have discovered them and will definitely look forward to using them again in future. Sal B in Sydney

I can't praise Acorn Fabrics highly enough. A wonderful company, I didn't think such companies still existed. Five stars are just not enough!
